Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa

A Helsinki classic on the shores of Laajalahti Bay

Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa is one of Finland’s best-known hotel and congress centers. Located in Munkkiniemi on the shores of Laajalahti Bay, the complex consists of three buildings from different eras: Vanha Torppa, completed in 1937, and two hotel buildings from the 1960s and 1970s, Rantahotelli and Kalliohotelli.

L Architects was responsible for designing the renovation of the hotel complex. Designed by architect Markus Tavio in 1969, Rantahotelli is set into a slope descending toward the shore – a mass that appears low from the road reveals its full scale when viewed from the water.

Vanha Torppa – a protected architectural gem

Vanha Torppa was designed by architect Jarl Eklund and completed in 1937. It combines modern architecture with traditional features, with details partly referencing Central European building traditions. The building was extended in 1938–1939, when its characteristic round hall with a conical roof was added.

The round hall is the visual heart of the complex: its magnificent blue dome with chandeliers has been preserved in almost its original form. The building is protected in the local detailed plan with the designation sr-1, and over the decades it has been the setting for numerous significant state and cultural events.

Kalliohotelli

Kalliohotelli was completed in 1975 to a design by architect Einari Teräsvirta. The red-brick building sits on top of the rock on the upper slope, and its sculpturally curving south wing is one of the visually strongest elements of the hotel complex. In 1997, the hotel buildings were connected by an arched canopy spanning the courtyard.

The renovation covered the renewal of hotel rooms and bathrooms, the renovation of the kitchen facilities and the construction of a LivingWell Express fitness space in place of the former sauna department. In addition, the entrance lobby, bar and breakfast restaurant were renewed, and the corridors, floor lobbies and congress hall were refurbished.
