“When the city
starts to feel
close”

The competition entry presents a solution for creating a distinctive local center, a pleasant residential area rich in experiences and a commercially viable whole with high-quality public outdoor spaces in the Kaleva-Hakametsä area.

Sammonkatu is one of the most important streets leading into the center of Tampere. The street follows the open urban structure typical of the 1950s, where the street space is mainly defined by the short ends of residential buildings. The planning projects in the surrounding area follow a rather closed block structure.

The proposal does not compete with the structure of Sammonkatu; instead, it creates a distinctive end point for the street, and at the same time a starting point, at the junction with the main thoroughfare to Hervanta, based on a variation of the perimeter block. The structure of the competition entry is based on a continuous residential mass that wraps around public and private spaces. The building masses lining the main streets and outer edges form urban, well-defined street space and shield the interior from noise. Residential courtyards and freely meandering public outdoor spaces are left inside.

The pedestrian bridge from the direction of the Hakametsä hall ends at the level of the second floor of Prisma. This difference in level has been turned into a clear identity feature for the local center. The commercial spaces and public outdoor spaces form a continuous, descending and varied sequence of spaces, along which services and meeting places are located. At the Sarvijaakonaukio station, the block structure opens toward Prisma. Carefully placed openings turn the tram stop into a station rather than a mere stop and make the station part of the local center.
