From an 80’s Office Building to a Care Facility

Located on a rocky shoreline in Herttoniemi, the late-1980s office building was underused and in need of refurbishment. New uses alongside office functions were considered for the property. By analysing the area’s age structure, service offering, and connections, a need for care services in the area emerged.

The wing facing Hitsaajankatu has been retained for office use, while the wing facing Suolakivenkatu has been converted into care facilities. The design includes four separate group homes in the care wing, to be operated by two different care providers. Both providers will offer enhanced care for their clients.

The office spaces will be transformed into modern multi-user, activity-based workplaces. All building services will be renewed to meet current standards. The building’s façades will largely be preserved. The windows have been replaced to improve thermal insulation and reduce cooling needs. A new communal balcony has been built at the southern end of the building for the care facilities’ use.
